Ahead of the upcoming EU-India summit later this month, London's Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford and her Liberal group colleagues have tabled an amendment which has been Incorporated into a European Parliament resolution on the summit. It calls on India to protect tigers from habitat loss and criminal poachers and on the EU to provide technical expertise and financial support for the conservation effort.
Sarah Ludford, who has long campaigned against the illegal trade in tiger skins and parts, said:
"These splendid animals are being driven to extinction and urgent steps must be taken to prevent further loss of habitat and the continuing illegal trade.."
"India must treat the poaching and trading of tiger parts as the serious organised crime that it is, but the EU also has the capacity and resources to help India, which faces many other pressures, ensure that the goal of conservation can be secured."
"A key aim must be to give local people living near tiger reservations a stake in their protection, whether through tourist revenue or compensation for loss of livestock. Only local and international partnership can save tigers from rapid decline and disappearance."
