MEPs have endorsed a historic climate change package as part of the EU's fight against global warming. The package includes plans for green investments, carbon capture and storage (CCS), renewable energy and carbon credits.
Commenting on the vote, London's Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford said:
"This package is good not just for protection of our environment as we cut green house emissions, including through carbon capture and storage to reduce CO2 emissions from power plants. It is also good for the economy since green investments will mean new industries and jobs and the provisions on renewable energy will help Europe achieve energy independence."
"Liberal Democrats had to make some compromises in order to agree this package. But it is a vitally important first step, and the ability of the EU's 27 member states to unite in support is a signal to the rest of the world that Europe is serious about climate change."
"With Barack Obama in the White House from January promising a revolution towards US leadership in tackling global warming and the Kyoto successor conference in Copenhagen, 2009 is make-or-break year in stopping climate change going out of control."
