Betty Knight, a well-respected Clerkenwell community figure who was the long-serving leader of Spa Green tenants, is to be presented with a special award from the Mayor of Islington today.
Liberal Democrat MEP for Islington Sarah Ludford, who as councillor for Clerkenwell in the 1990s worked closely with Betty on housing and other local issues, said:
"Knowing Betty for almost 20 years, it gives me great pleasure to welcome this much-deserved award for an outstanding community champion. Betty's leadership led to the establishment of the Spa Green estate Tenant Management Organisation, an early and pioneering TMO, and no-one could have worked with more dedication to improve the lives of residents.
"Betty has always been charming but forceful as she battled to make things better for the people on her estate and around. She was a real inspiration to me while I represented the ward as a councillor and gave me immeasurable help, support and friendship. She was also very influential in making sure that the important redevelopment of local Sadler's Wells theatre was both successful and neighbour-friendly."
